In 2024, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) actively participated in collaborative planning initiatives with local and national governments to address climate change–related disasters and strengthen community resilience. Through partnerships with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and IPB University, Unpad co-organized a national seminar on “Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” to support Indonesia’s climate mitigation and adaptation goals. Additionally, Unpad worked closely with the Sumedang Regency Government in post-earthquake recovery and disaster resilience planning, integrating disaster risk reduction into long-term regional development strategies. These cooperative efforts demonstrate Unpad’s role as a strategic academic partner in formulating science-based policies, fostering preparedness, and supporting sustainable and climate-resilient regional development.
Strengthening Commitment to Climate Action Through Enhanced NDC Collaboration
Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with IPB University and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia, organized the Seminar, Symposium, and Workshop on Climate Change with the theme “Active Multi Stakeholder Participation in Achieving Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” on July 22, 2024. The event underscored the vital role of Enhanced NDC as a national framework to strengthen Indonesia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate impacts. Unpad Rector Prof. Rina Indiastuti emphasized that universities must go beyond research by translating knowledge into strategic, collaborative actions that support the country’s climate goals. Experts from the Ministry and IPB highlighted that achieving the NDC targets requires cross sector cooperation, innovation, and community engagement to address the triple planetary crisis such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Through this initiative, Unpad reaffirmed its role as a key academic partner in advancing Indonesia’s climate agenda and building resilience for sustainable development.
Unpad Supports Post-Earthquake Recovery and Strengthens Disaster Resilience Planning in Sumedang

In January 2024, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) distributed a donation of IDR 250 million to support post-earthquake recovery efforts in Sumedang Regency. The assistance was handed over directly by the Rector of Unpad to the Acting Regent of Sumedang on January 3, 2024, as a form of concern and solidarity from the university community for the affected residents. Beyond providing financial aid, this initiative also served as an important moment for Unpad and the Sumedang Regency Government to strengthen collaboration in future disaster mitigation and management efforts.
During the event, the Sumedang Regency Government emphasized the need for a “redesign” of the regional development plan that integrates disaster mitigation factors into the Long-Term Regional Development Plan (RPJPD). This reflects a shift in focus from short-term emergency response toward long-term planning aimed at reducing disaster risks and enhancing the region’s resilience to natural shocks.
Through this involvement, Unpad played an active role as a strategic partner of the local government in formulating science-based policies, supporting disaster-resilient development, and ensuring that sustainability and community safety are prioritized in regional planning. This initiative also demonstrates Unpad’s commitment to integrating research, community service, and collaborative action in supporting national efforts to address various disaster risks, whether caused by geological factors or climate change.
