Prioritizing Pedestrian Access for a Sustainable and Inclusive Campus Environment

11.4.6.Universitas padjadjaran pedestrian

Universitas Padjadjaran prioritizes pedestrian access on its campus to promote a safe, inclusive, and sustainable environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The university has developed well-maintained pedestrian pathways, accessible crossings, and green corridors that encourage walking as part of daily campus activities. These pedestrian facilities not only support academic mobility but also contribute to physical health and environmental sustainability. Regular walking helps improve fitness, reduce obesity risk, and decrease reliance on motorized vehicles, aligning with Unpad’s Eco-Friendly Transportation Program that emphasizes pedestrian and cyclist-friendly infrastructure.

To ensure comfort and accessibility, Unpad has constructed connecting corridors equipped with canopies linking 146 academic buildings built between 1985 and 2015. For 39 newer buildings constructed after 2015, dedicated walking paths have been provided even though some are not yet connected by corridors. Unpad also ensures inclusivity by designing accessible routes for persons with disabilities. Pathways are equipped with ramps for wheelchair users and tactile paving for visually impaired pedestrians, allowing equitable access to campus facilities. Currently, 68.82% of Unpad’s main buildings are equipped with accessibility features for individuals with disabilities.

The university also enhances pedestrian safety and comfort by installing streetlights every 30 meters along walking paths to improve visibility at night and prevent potential crime. Additionally, Unpad enforces a one-way traffic system within the campus to minimize road hazards, especially in hilly areas where two-way traffic could endanger pedestrians. This policy effectively reduces vehicle speed and encourages more walking while fostering social interactions among students from different faculties. Through these integrated efforts, Universitas Padjadjaran continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and community well-being within a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly campus.
