As part of its strong institutional commitment to advancing sustainability education and awareness, Universitas Padjadjaran has developed a comprehensive framework for the assessment of sustainability knowledge among students, faculty members, and the wider academic community. This initiative reflects the university’s continuous effort to cultivate sustainability literacy and align its educational practices with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The assessment aims to evaluate understanding and awareness of sustainable development, enabling the university to promote informed decision making, responsible behavior, and active participation in sustainability initiatives.
The Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge (ASK) serves as a key tool to measure literacy across three core dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social. Participants complete a structured set of multiple choice questions designed to assess both conceptual understanding and the application of sustainability principles. The ASK instrument, adapted from the framework developed by Zwickle and Jones (2018), provides a standardized and research based approach that allows Universitas Padjadjaran to track progress, benchmark literacy levels, and strengthen sustainability integration across all academic programs.
Findings from the ASK are used to identify knowledge gaps and provide valuable feedback for curriculum development. This process ensures that sustainability concepts are embedded not only in environmental studies but also in disciplines such as economics, law, social sciences, health, and technology. The assessment outcomes guide the university in enhancing interdisciplinary learning and developing teaching methods that connect theory to real world sustainability challenges, fostering students’ ability to think critically and act effectively in promoting sustainable development.
In collaboration with the SDGs Center Universitas Padjadjaran, the university also uses the assessment results to support training, workshops, and outreach programs that promote sustainability competencies among students and staff. These activities encourage reflective learning, community engagement, and cross sector collaboration. Through the implementation of the Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge, Universitas Padjadjaran not only evaluates progress in sustainability literacy but also reinforces its mission to build a responsible and sustainability oriented academic community dedicated to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
