Policy for Minimising Plastic Use at Universitas Padjadjaran

plastic waste

Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) has established clear and comprehensive policies to minimize plastic use across its campuses, supported by Rector Regulation No. 10 of 2022 concerning the Prohibition of Single-Use Plastics. This regulation aims to reduce plastic waste by promoting reusable and eco-friendly alternatives while fostering environmental awareness and behavioral change within the academic community.

Under this policy:

  1. Each work unit is responsible for supporting, maintaining, monitoring, and coordinating the implementation of the single-use plastic prohibition.

  2. Each unit must facilitate and ensure compliance with the policy across campus facilities.

  3. All members of the Unpad community are obliged to avoid single-use plastics and adopt sustainable alternatives.

  4. Visitors to Unpad are informed and encouraged to comply with the university’s plastic reduction policy.

Rector Regulation No. 10 of 2022

Universitas Padjadjaran, through Circular Letter Number 2420/UN6.WR4/TU.00/2025 concerning the use of drinking containers (tumblers) to reduce plastic waste, reinforces its commitment to environmental health and the implementation of Rector Regulation Number 3 of 2022 on environmentally friendly campus management. All members of the academic community and administrative staff are encouraged to use personal drinking containers as part of the university’s effort to minimize plastic waste, while the use of single use plastic products such as plastic bottles, straws, bags, and other packaging is discouraged in both academic and nonacademic activities. All directorates, faculties, schools, and units are required to provide supporting facilities to enable consistent application of zero waste principles, and leaders of these units are requested to disseminate and enforce Rector Regulation Number 33 of 2021 concerning the prohibition of single use plastics, as amended by Rector Regulation Number 10 of 2022.

In line with its commitment, Unpad also drives research and innovation in sustainable packaging technologies. Through Finder Unpad, led by Prof. Dr. Eng. I Made Joni, the university presented advanced powder processing technology at Allpack Indonesia 2024 as an eco-friendly packaging solution that optimizes materials, reduces waste, and produces biodegradable products. This innovation, developed in collaboration with Baiyo, demonstrates Unpad’s strong synergy between academia and industry in promoting sustainability and minimizing plastic dependency.
